About the Masterclass
The Screening Series “Negotiating Modernity” looks at three important issues — Between City and Village, Between Men and Women, Between China and Hong Kong — that concern modern day China, using mostly Hong Kong films as a starting point of discussion. Presented through three semesters, the screenings had resulted in very interesting and meaningful discussions on the topics.
At the conclusion of the series, this lecture will look back at the nine films and examine the three issues, on how they evolve over the years, how they relate to each other and how they point to the future of China and Hong Kong. The lecture will also examine the Hong Kong film industry, how it relates to its Chinese counterpart and how both industries will develop in the future.
